Bo Sang Umbrella Making Village
Colorful village where artisans hand-paint traditional sa (mulberry bark) paper umbrellas and parasols using natural pigments and ancestral designs.
About this place
Located 9km east of Chiang Mai, this village has specialized in umbrella making for over 100 years. The paper is made from sa bark soaked in the Mae Ping River, then stretched over bamboo frames. Visit during dry season when paper-making conditions are optimal. Many workshops offer painting classes (200-500 baht) where you can decorate your own umbrella. The annual Umbrella Festival in January showcases the most elaborate designs.
