Ethical Elephant Sanctuaries
Where to have a genuine, ethical elephant experience in Thailand — and how to spot the tourist traps.
About this place
Thailand has over 200 elephant camps, but only a handful operate ethically. The gold standard is Elephant Nature Park (ENP) in Chiang Mai, founded by Sangduen "Lek" Chailert, which rescues elephants from logging and tourism industries. At ethical sanctuaries you observe elephants, prepare food for them, and may bathe alongside them in rivers — but you don't ride them. Riding requires a painful "breaking" process that ethical operators refuse to support. Other reputable options: Boon Lott's Elephant Sanctuary (Sukhothai), Elephant Haven (Kanchanaburi), and Burm and Emily's Elephant Sanctuary (Chiang Mai). Red flags: riding, painting, circus tricks, or chained elephants.
