Bangkok Floating Markets

Bangkok, Thailand

An honest comparison of Thailand's famous floating markets — which are genuine experiences and which are tourist traps.

About this place

Thailand's floating markets range from completely authentic to completely staged. Damnoen Saduak is the most famous and most touristy — packed with boats loaded with souvenirs rather than food, it's essentially a theme park. Amphawa Floating Market (weekends only, 60 km from Bangkok) is far more genuine: locals actually shop here, the seafood grilled on boats is excellent, and the evening firefly boat tours along the canal are magical. Khlong Lat Mayom (Bangkok) is the most authentic and least touristy — a real community market where locals buy produce, with boat noodles and Thai desserts. Taling Chan Market (Bangkok) is also worth visiting on weekends.
