Kanchanaburi
The Bridge over the River Kwai, Erawan Falls' seven emerald tiers, and the haunting Death Railway — all within easy reach of Bangkok.
About this place
Kanchanaburi province offers one of Thailand's most varied day-trip or weekend experiences. The Bridge over the River Kwai and associated WWII museums (Hellfire Pass, JEATH War Museum) provide sobering historical context. Erawan National Park, 65 km north, has seven tiers of cascading emerald pools that are some of the most beautiful waterfalls in Southeast Asia. The Death Railway (now partially a tourist train) hugs the cliff face along the Kwai Noi River — the Wang Po viaduct section is particularly dramatic. Floating raft houses on the River Kwai make for a memorable overnight stay.

Erawan Falls Strategy
Arrive at park opening (8:00am) to have the lower tiers to yourself. The full climb to tier 7 takes 1.5-2 hours each way. Tiers 1-3 are easy; tiers 4-7 involve scrambling. Weekends are extremely crowded — go on a weekday if possible. Entry is 300 THB for foreigners.
Getting Around
Day Trip from Bangkok
Minivans leave Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal for Kanchanaburi (120-150 THB, 2.5 hours). Or take the iconic train from Thonburi station (100 THB, 3 hours). The Bridge and Death Railway can be done as a day trip; add Erawan Falls and you'll need an overnight stay.
