Khon Kaen
A gateway to authentic Isaan culture with a dinosaur museum, the best som tam in the country, and almost zero tourists.
About this place
Khon Kaen is northeastern Thailand's largest and most developed city, yet it receives almost no international tourists. This is Isaan at its most genuine β markets selling insects, som tam stalls with mortar-pounded salads that make Bangkok versions seem tame, and a thriving university culture that keeps the city young and energetic. The Phu Wiang Dinosaur Museum displays fossils of Siamotyrannus, a T-Rex ancestor discovered nearby. Bueng Kaen Nakhon (the city lake) has a pleasant walking and cycling path. The nearby Phu Kradueng plateau is one of Thailand's most popular hiking destinations with camping on top.
