Khon Kaen

About this place

Khon Kaen is northeastern Thailand's largest and most developed city, yet it receives almost no international tourists. This is Isaan at its most genuine — markets selling insects, som tam stalls with mortar-pounded salads that make Bangkok versions seem tame, and a thriving university culture that keeps the city young and energetic. The Phu Wiang Dinosaur Museum displays fossils of Siamotyrannus, a T-Rex ancestor discovered nearby. Bueng Kaen Nakhon (the city lake) has a pleasant walking and cycling path. The nearby Phu Kradueng plateau is one of Thailand's most popular hiking destinations with camping on top.
