Koh Samet sits just 6.5 km off the coast of Rayong province, making it the most accessible decent island from Bangkok (200 km, about 3.5 hours by car + ferry). The island is technically a national park (200 THB entry for foreigners), which has limited some development. Hat Sai Kaew (Diamond Beach) is the busiest and most developed, with fire shows every night. Ao Phai and Ao Vong Duen offer a better balance of facilities and peace. The western side is almost entirely undeveloped. It's a popular weekend destination for Bangkok Thais — arrive Friday afternoon, leave Sunday, and you've had a beach holiday without taking time off work.
