Koh Tao (Turtle Island) has become the world capital of budget scuba diving certification. Over 100 dive shops compete for business, driving PADI Open Water prices to 8,000-10,000 THB β far cheaper than anywhere else. But Koh Tao is more than diving: the snorkeling at Japanese Garden and Hin Wong Bay is world-class, the viewpoints offer panoramic gulf views, and the small island (21 sq km) creates an intimate atmosphere where everyone knows each other within days. Water taxis connect otherwise inaccessible beaches.

Cheapest Dive Certification
Compare at least 3 dive shops before committing. PADI Open Water runs 8,000-10,000 THB. Most shops include free accommodation during the 3-4 day course β factor this into the value. Crystal Dive, Ban's Diving, and Big Blue are well-established operations.

March through September offers the best underwater visibility (20-40 meters). October-November can bring rough seas and rain. Whale sharks are occasionally spotted at Chumphon Pinnacle from March to May.
