Lopburi
Thailand's "Monkey City" — ancient Khmer ruins overrun by hundreds of macaques, making for a quirky day trip from Bangkok.
About this place
Lopburi was an important city in the Khmer empire, and its Prang Sam Yot (three Khmer prangs) and Phra Narai Ratchaniwet palace are genuine historical treasures. But what most visitors come for are the hundreds of crab-eating macaques that have taken over the old town center. The monkeys live in and around the temples, climb on visitors, and have become the town's identity — there's even an annual Monkey Buffet Festival in November where tables of food are laid out for them. The town is 2.5 hours from Bangkok by train, making it an easy day trip. Keep belongings secured and sunglasses in your bag.
