Mae Hong Son
A remote mountain province with misty valleys, Shan-Burmese temples, Tham Lot cave, and the serene lake at Pang Ung.
About this place
Mae Hong Son sits in Thailand's northwestern corner, wedged between mountains and the Myanmar border. The provincial capital has a distinctly Burmese feel β Wat Jong Kham and Wat Jong Klang reflect in a scenic lake surrounded by mountains. The province is famous for the "Mae Hong Son Loop," a spectacular 600 km motorbike route from Chiang Mai via Pai and Mae Sariang with 4,000+ curves. Tham Lot cave is one of Southeast Asia's most impressive cave systems. Pang Ung reservoir, ringed by pine forests and often shrouded in morning mist, is dubbed "Thailand's Switzerland." Getting here is half the adventure β the flight from Chiang Mai takes 30 minutes over mountains.
