Sukhothai Historical Park
The ruins of Thailand's first kingdom — a UNESCO World Heritage site best explored by bicycle at sunrise.
About this place
Sukhothai was the capital of the first Thai kingdom (1238-1438) and is considered the birthplace of Thai civilization, the Thai alphabet, and Theravada Buddhist art. The Historical Park covers 70 square kilometers with 193 ruins including Wat Mahathat (the spiritual center with its iconic lotus-bud stupas), Wat Si Chum (housing a massive seated Buddha peering through narrow walls), and Wat Sa Si on an island in a lotus pond. The park is divided into five zones — the central zone is the most compact and popular. Cycling the ruins at dawn or dusk, when tourist buses have departed, is one of Thailand's most peaceful experiences.

Getting Around
Explore by Bicycle
Rent a bicycle from any guesthouse in New Sukhothai or at the park entrance (30-50 THB/day). The central zone is compact enough to cycle in 2-3 hours. The northern and western zones require more time and energy but have far fewer visitors.
Best Time to Visit
Dawn and Dusk Photography
The central zone is open 6:30am-6:00pm. Arrive at opening for the best light and fewest tourists. Late afternoon (4-6pm) also works well, with warm light on the ruins. The park entrance fee is 100 THB per zone per day.
