One of Ayutthaya's most important temples, Wat Mahathat houses the famous Buddha head wrapped in banyan tree roots - a perfect symbol of nature reclaiming history. Visit early morning (7-8 AM) to avoid crowds and capture the best lighting for photos. The temple was built in the 14th century and served as the residence of the Supreme Patriarch of Buddhism.
