How to Pick a Thai Island

Thailand has over 1,400 islands, of which maybe 80 are inhabited and accessible to tourists. Choosing between them is genuinely difficult without a framework. This guide rates 12 of the most visited islands across seven categories so you can quickly identify which island fits your trip.

Categories rated 1-5:

  • Beach quality (sand, water clarity, swimming conditions)
  • Budget friendliness (1 = most expensive, 5 = cheapest)
  • Nightlife (1 = none, 5 = intense party scene)
  • Diving and snorkeling quality
  • Family friendliness
  • Couples and romance
  • Digital nomad suitability (wifi, coworking, long-stay infrastructure)

Critical Note: Two Coasts, Different Weather

Thailand's islands sit on two different coasts with near-opposite weather patterns.

Andaman Sea (west coast): Phuket, Koh Lanta, Koh Lipe, Koh Yao Noi, Koh Phi Phi, Similan Islands. Dry season: November-April. Wet season: May-October (some islands close completely).

Gulf of Thailand (east coast): Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, Koh Chang, Koh Kood, Koh Mak. Dry season: roughly February-September. Wet season: October-January (storm season with rough seas).

This means in any given month, one coast is better than the other. See our seasonal guide for detail.

The Islands

Koh Samui

Province: Surat Thani | Gulf of Thailand | Airport: Yes (USM)

Koh Samui is Thailand's second most visited island (after Phuket) -- a large, developed island with resorts, malls, international restaurants, and an airport with direct flights from Bangkok (approximately 1,600-3,500 THB on Bangkok Airways).

Beaches: Chaweng Beach is the main strip -- long, beautiful white sand, but packed with sun loungers and commercial development. Lamai Beach (south) is less busy. Choeng Mon (north) is quieter and picturesque. Quality: 4/5.

Budget: Mid-to-high. Samui is the most expensive of the three Gulf islands. Budget guesthouses exist (500-800 THB) but the island skews toward resorts and package tourism. Budget: 2/5.

Nightlife: Chaweng Road is a serious party strip -- bars and clubs open until 2am, frequent live music, fire shows on the beach. Nightlife: 4/5.

Diving: Samui itself is not a great dive destination (water can be murky). Day trips to Koh Tao (2-hour ferry) for diving are common. Diving: 2/5 (locally); use Koh Tao.

Families: Good family infrastructure -- calm-water beaches (north coast), resort pools, international food. The airport makes it easy. Families: 4/5.

Couples: Beautiful beachfront resorts, excellent restaurants, spa culture, sunset boat cruises. Couples: 4/5.

Nomads: Getting better -- some coworking space, decent internet in town. But expensive and not ideally set up. Nomads: 2/5.

Best for: Package holidays, first-time island visitors, families, those wanting nightlife with beach quality.

Koh Phangan

Province: Surat Thani | Gulf of Thailand | Ferry from Samui or Donsak

Koh Phangan is famous worldwide for the Full Moon Party (Haad Rin Beach, every full moon -- 20,000+ people, 200 THB entry). But the island is much larger than just the party beach, and the northern and western coasts are genuinely beautiful and peaceful.

Beaches: Haad Rin (party, crowded), Chaloklum (north, excellent), Thong Nai Pan (northeast, arguably the most beautiful beach on the island -- remote, requires a dirt road or boat). Quality: 4/5.

Budget: Significantly cheaper than Samui. Budget bungalows from 300-600 THB. Mid-range guesthouses 600-1,500 THB. Budget: 4/5.

Nightlife: The Full Moon Party is legendary and worth doing once. Also Half Moon, Black Moon, and Shiva Moon parties throughout the month. Outside party dates, the island is surprisingly quiet. Nightlife: 5/5 (on party dates); 2/5 otherwise.

Diving: Decent. Good conditions most of the year. Nothing compared to Koh Tao (1 hour by ferry). Diving: 3/5.

Families: Not ideal around Full Moon Party dates. The north of the island (Chaloklum, Thong Nai Pan) is peaceful and family-friendly. Check party dates before booking. Families: 3/5 (avoid party dates).

Couples: The quieter northern beaches are romantic and relatively undeveloped. Couples: 3/5.

Nomads: A growing and active nomad scene, particularly in the Ban Tai area. KoPa Coworking, 7 Days Coworking. Internet improving but not always reliable on the coast. Nomads: 4/5.

Best for: Full Moon Party experience, budget travelers, nomads, those who want variety (party option available, quiet beaches also available).

Koh Tao

Province: Surat Thani | Gulf of Thailand | Ferry from Chumphon or Samui

Koh Tao is the world's most popular place to get a PADI Open Water diving certification. Small island (21 sq km), easily walkable, cheap, excellent diving infrastructure, and a young party scene that starts and ends earlier than Samui or Phangan.

Beaches: Sairee Beach (main beach, long, excellent) and numerous small bays around the island (Aow Leuk, Tanote Bay, Shark Bay -- named for the blacktip reef sharks that swim there year-round). Quality: 4/5.

Budget: The cheapest of the three Gulf islands. Dive resort dorm bunks from 200-300 THB. Budget guesthouses 400-700 THB. Food costs lower than Samui/Phangan. Budget: 5/5.

Nightlife: Lively bar strip on Sairee Beach -- dive-crew culture means bars close earlier than Samui (many close by 1-2am). Good fun, not hardcore. Nightlife: 3/5.

Diving: Excellent. Beginner-friendly conditions, lots of marine life. Blacktip reef sharks are almost guaranteed. PADI Open Water: 9,900-13,500 THB. Fun dives: 600-1,200 THB per dive. Koh Tao has over 50 dive schools -- choose by instructor:student ratio. Diving: 5/5.

Families: Small island with gentle beaches -- good for older children. Very limited facilities for young children. Families: 3/5.

Couples: Quiet bays and bungalows, excellent for couples who dive. Less resort-romantic than Samui. Couples: 3/5.

Nomads: Very small island -- community is close-knit but opportunities limited. Intermittent power and internet. Nomads: 2/5.

Best for: Divers (all levels), budget travelers, young backpackers, first-time divers.

Koh Lanta

Province: Krabi | Andaman Sea | Ferry from Krabi or Koh Lipe

Koh Lanta is one of Thailand's most underrated islands -- large, laid-back, with long beaches, a charming Old Town on the east coast, and a sophisticated cafe-restaurant scene that punches above its weight. It attracts a 30+ crowd who want beautiful beaches without the Patong chaos.

Beaches: Long Beach (Hat Khlong Dao) in the north is 3 km of flat sand perfect for families. Klong Nin, Kantiang Bay, and the southern beaches get progressively quieter and more beautiful. Quality: 4/5.

Budget: Mid-range. Cheaper than Phuket or Samui. Budget bungalows from 500-800 THB, mid-range 1,000-3,000 THB. Budget: 3/5.

Nightlife: Minimal. Some bars on Long Beach, a few reggae bars. This is not a party island. Nightlife: 1/5.

Diving: Excellent Andaman Sea diving -- nearby sites include Koh Haa, Hin Daeng, and Hin Muang (manta rays and whale sharks). Diving: 4/5.

Families: Excellent. Flat beaches with shallow water entry (unlike many Andaman islands), calm northern coast, family bungalow resorts. Families: 5/5.

Couples: Romantic, relaxed, excellent beachfront dining. Couples: 4/5.

Nomads: Growing. Some coworking options, decent 4G in the north of the island. But limited. Nomads: 2/5.

Best for: Families, couples, beach-focused travelers who want quality over nightlife, divers.

Koh Lipe

Province: Satun | Andaman Sea | Ferry from Pak Bara or Langkawi (Malaysia)

Koh Lipe is a tiny island (2 km long) in Tarutao National Park, near the Malaysian border. The water here is some of the most spectacular in Thailand -- extraordinarily clear, vibrant turquoise, with a coral reef surrounding most of the island.

Beaches: Three main beaches. Sunrise Beach (east) -- the prettiest, calm water, excellent snorkeling directly from shore. Sunset Beach (west) -- good for sunsets, slightly rougher. Pattaya Beach (south) -- boat arrivals, most commercial. Quality: 5/5.

Budget: Expensive. Remote location means everything is shipped in. Budget bungalows 700-1,200 THB; most accommodation 1,500-5,000 THB. Food 25-50% more expensive than mainland. Budget: 1/5.

Nightlife: Surprisingly lively for such a small island -- a strip of bars on Pattaya Beach. Not intense, but more than you'd expect. Nightlife: 2/5.

Diving: Very good coral, excellent visibility, diverse marine life. Diving: 4/5.

Families: Beautiful and calm water, but expensive and limited facilities for young children. Fine for older kids. Families: 3/5.

Couples: Very romantic -- stunning water, small island feel, beautiful sunrises on Sunrise Beach. Couples: 5/5.

Nomads: Poor. Unreliable internet, expensive, limited long-stay infrastructure. Nomads: 1/5.

Best for: Couples, honeymooners, beach quality obsessives, those willing to pay more for exceptional water clarity.

Koh Chang

Province: Trat | Gulf of Thailand | Ferry from Trat or fly to Trat

Koh Chang (Elephant Island) is Thailand's second largest island, just 12 km from Cambodia. Less visited than the southern islands, it has jungle-covered mountains dropping to good beaches and a relaxed atmosphere.

Beaches: White Sand Beach (north -- main commercial area), Lonely Beach (south -- backpacker budget), Kai Bae (family-friendly middle). The interior has impressive waterfalls (Than Mayom, Klong Plu). Quality: 3/5.

Budget: Good value compared to Samui or Phuket. Budget bungalows from 400-700 THB. Budget: 4/5.

Nightlife: Decent on White Sand Beach. Better than Lanta, less intense than Phangan. Nightlife: 2/5.

Diving: Moderate. Some coral reefs with decent marine life. Not in the league of Koh Tao or Andaman sites. Diving: 2/5.

Families: Good. Safer roads than some islands, good beach infrastructure on White Sand Beach. Families: 3/5.

Couples: Nice, but not especially romantic compared to Andaman alternatives. Couples: 3/5.

Nomads: Reasonable. Decent 4G connectivity, growing cafe scene. Good long-stay value. Nomads: 3/5.

Best for: Travelers in the east (Cambodian border route), budget long-stays, trekking in national park interior.

Koh Kood (Koh Kut)

Province: Trat | Gulf of Thailand | Ferry from Laem Sok or Koh Chang

Koh Kood is what Koh Samui was in the 1980s -- beautiful, relatively undeveloped, with arguably the best beaches on the Gulf Coast (particularly Ao Phrao Beach and Ao Ngamkho). Very few budget options; this is an upscale eco-escape island.

Beaches: Exceptional. Ao Phrao and Ao Ngamkho are among the most beautiful beaches in the Gulf -- white sand, clear emerald water. Quality: 5/5.

Budget: Expensive. Mostly mid-range to luxury resorts. Few budget options below 2,000 THB. Budget: 1/5.

Nightlife: Almost none. One or two beach bars. Nightlife: 1/5.

Couples: Very romantic -- quiet, beautiful, intimate atmosphere. Couples: 5/5.

Nomads: Very poor infrastructure for working. Nomads: 1/5.

Best for: Upscale beach escape, couples, families with budget, those who want undeveloped beauty.

Koh Yao Noi

Province: Phang Nga | Andaman Sea | Ferry from Phuket or Krabi

Koh Yao Noi sits in the middle of Phang Nga Bay -- surrounded by the dramatic limestone karst scenery, a 30-minute ferry from Phuket. Almost entirely Muslim fishing community. Very quiet, very local, extraordinary landscapes.

Beaches: Not swimming-beach quality (tidal flats, mangroves on much of the shoreline) but the scenery is extraordinary. Quality: 2/5 (swimming); 5/5 (scenery).

Budget: Good. Local fishing village economy means food is cheap and local. Resort accommodation ranges widely. Budget: 3/5.

Nightlife: Essentially none (Muslim community, limited alcohol). Nightlife: 1/5.

Diving: Excellent Andaman sites accessible by day trip. Diving: 3/5.

Families: Peaceful, safe, but limited beach swimming. Families: 3/5.

Couples: Extremely romantic -- longtail boat tours through the karst scenery, very quiet evenings, stunning views. Couples: 5/5.

Nomads: Very limited. Good for detox, poor for working. Nomads: 1/5.

Best for: Couples seeking seclusion, photography enthusiasts, those wanting local Thai life away from tourist infrastructure.

Koh Mak

Province: Trat | Gulf of Thailand | Ferry from Laem Sok or Koh Chang

Koh Mak is tiny (16 sq km), with no traffic lights, no motorcycles for hire (only bicycles and electric carts), and some of the Gulf's nicest beach-quality water. Deliberately low-key.

Beaches: Ao Suan Yai and Ao Kao -- beautiful, clean, shallow. Good for swimming. Quality: 4/5.

Budget: Mid-range. Very limited budget options. Budget: 2/5.

Nightlife: One beach bar. Nightlife: 1/5.

Families: Excellent. Car-free atmosphere, safe beaches, no chaotic scooter traffic. Families: 5/5.

Couples: Very peaceful and romantic. Couples: 4/5.

Nomads: Poor. Very limited internet. Nomads: 1/5.

Best for: Families with young children, couples wanting complete quiet, beach relaxation.

Koh Phi Phi

Province: Krabi | Andaman Sea | Ferry from Phuket or Krabi

Koh Phi Phi is famous -- Maya Bay (The Beach film location) sits between its two islands, and Phi Phi Don (the inhabited island) has turquoise water and dramatic scenery. It is also one of Thailand's most overcrowded tourist destinations. The main village is dense with tour operators, bars, and hostels.

Beaches: Maya Bay (day trip from Phi Phi Don, 500 THB, now timed-entry limited to 300 visitors) -- spectacular. Long Beach on Phi Phi Don is excellent. Quality: 4/5 (selected beaches).

Budget: Surprisingly affordable. Hostel dorms 250-500 THB. The party-backpacker market keeps prices competitive. Budget: 3/5.

Nightlife: Intense. Multiple beach bars, fire shows, club nights. Very young crowd. Nightlife: 4/5.

Diving: Good. Leopard sharks, turtles, good coral. Diving: 4/5.

Families: Not recommended. Overcrowded, party atmosphere. Families: 1/5.

Couples: Beautiful setting but the party atmosphere and crowds undermine romance. Couples: 2/5.

Nomads: Poor infrastructure for working. Nomads: 1/5.

Best for: Party backpackers, young solo travelers, day trips to Maya Bay, divers.
